Rotterdam Rookie

Your first months in the city, sorted.

Rotterdam Rookie is a top-down pixel-art RPG that turns the experience of arriving in a new country and starting university into an interactive world. Created from the perspective of an international student arriving at Erasmus University Rotterdam, the game gives players fourteen in-game days to navigate the realities of settling into a new city: finding accommodation, dealing with Dutch bureaucracy, getting a BSN, opening a bank account, sorting DigiD and health insurance, finding a bike, earning money, attending university and building a new social circle.

Rather than presenting international student life through another orientation document or welcome email, Rotterdam Rookie lets players experience it for themselves. Every decision has consequences for energy, money, mood and stress, meaning that settling into a new country is not simply about completing tasks as quickly as possible. It is about balancing everything that comes with starting a new life while trying to build friendships, understand a new culture and find your place.

The game turns the chaos of moving abroad into something you actually want to explore.

Its retro, Game Boy-inspired pixel-art style gives Rotterdam Rookie an immediately recognisable identity while creating a sense of nostalgia that makes the experience approachable and memorable. Beneath the playful aesthetic is a story about something much more universal: what it feels like to arrive somewhere unfamiliar, not fully understand how things work and slowly turn an unfamiliar city into somewhere that feels like home.

As a KYNCT product, Rotterdam Rookie also represents a broader opportunity within the university experience economy. The game could eventually expand beyond Rotterdam and beyond the initial story, allowing universities to create interactive experiences around their own campuses, cities and student journeys. Prospective international students could explore a university before arriving, experience common challenges, discover important services and understand aspects of student life that are difficult to communicate through traditional orientation materials.

Universities could potentially use this as a new form of onboarding, allowing international and prospective students to learn about their environment through an experience rather than a document. Housing, registration, transport, student societies, campus life and cultural differences could all become part of an interactive world. Instead of simply telling students what to expect, universities could let them play through it.

This connects directly to KYNCT's wider vision of the Experience Economy. We believe experiences can be more powerful than information alone because they allow people to participate rather than simply consume. Rotterdam Rookie takes that idea into gaming, using an interactive world to transform a real-life transition into something people can explore, share and remember.

The current version is still an early demo rather than the final product, but it demonstrates the potential of combining gaming, storytelling and university life into a completely different way of experiencing what it means to become an international student.
